She’s a self-described “country girl” who loves cooking and wants a guy who is honest, funny and God-fearing. He says he’s drama-free and always happy, and likes confident women who can laugh at themselves. We sent them to Ristorante Tosca.

Tina: I went in about 7 o’clock. He must’ve come in when I went to the ladies’ room.

David: [I] got there around 7. I sat at the bar. I knew it was her when she walked out. I said, “Tina?” and she said, “Dave?” We’re like, “Hey!”

Tina: It just caught me off guard a little bit that he called my name, but I looked around, and he was the logical choice for the date.

David: On the physical side, you know, very attractive, beautiful skin, nice hair. Very classy, very graceful.

Tina: He was very nice, had very nice manners. He has a beautiful smile. It was easy to laugh and talk with him, ’cause he’s real jovial. It felt like the pressure was just off. I said, I’m just gonna be me, and that was okay.

David: I’m comfortable on any date I’m on, ’cause I’m a comfortable person. That’s just me. All the time.

Tina: I let him lead the conversation. Men like that; they like to be in charge.

David: Being the man, I let her ask a lot of the questions. I pretty much did listening and responding, and you know we just found out basic information about each other.

Tina: We deal with a lot of young people [through our jobs], and we both enjoy that.

David: Both of us like to cook. So, yeah, we did find out we had some things in common. We talked very, very easily with each other.

Tina: [He told me] he was very ill for a while. You couldn’t tell by looking at him. He is the type of man who smiles through his pain. He suffered a divorce, he’s been sick, he’s had a lot of financial difficulty, but he wears that smile through it all.

David: I usually keep things private, all the time. I don’t really discuss too much of my personal business.

Tina: We were both divorced. He and I are the same age. I have dated men my age. But it just works out that they’re usually younger men.

David: I don’t think [there was any flirting]. It was a first date, so we’re just feeling each other out and talking. Most times, most men don’t notice those small subtleties.

Tina: David will be a really good friend. But I just can’t see us doing the love-connection thing. I haven’t had a date with sparks in I can’t even tell you how long.

David: We both ate, and we talked a little bit after dinner. [Then] we decided we’d check on out.

Tina: It was about 9 o’clock that he said, “Are you ready to go?” and I said, “Yeah.” Remember, I said let the man lead. I gave him a hug, which I think maybe I caught him a little off guard with that. That’s just me; I’m a touchy person. He was a little friendly with that hug!

David: [We] walked down the street to my car, and then I took her to the subway station.

Tina: We exchanged numbers. He called me to make sure I got home okay. We’ll probably keep in touch. If David asked me out on a date again, I would go. As friends.

David: I’m sure we’ll get together again and go out and see how that goes. We just had pleasant conversation, kept it light and easy. Leaving a lot of room for other types of discussions later as we build trust in one another. You hit 50 like me, you don’t move as fast as you used to. You let the woman lead and see where she wants to go.

RATE THE DATE

Tina: A 4, 4.5. Birds weren’t singing and the earth didn’t move, but as far as the company and everything was concerned, I had a nice date, I had a lovely dinner with a very nice man. But you know it wasn’t necessarily a love connection. He’d make a really good friend.

David: I’d give it a 4 or a 5. It was very enjoyable.

UPDATE: The two talked on the phone and, at press time, were working out schedules to get together for a movie. Is it a date? “More like friends,” Tina says.
