2011 WINNER: "Chilean CoPeepapo Mine Rescue"

The 2011 winning diorama, which depicts the dramatic rescue of 33 mine workers in Copiapo, Chile, is the work of Mary Jo Ondrejka from Reston; Bryn Metzdorf from Fairfax; and Margaret Hartka from Parkton, Md. A gorgeous re-imagination of Edward Hopper's famous painting 'Nighthawks' won the judges’ hearts. 'I wanted to re - create the bleak urban landscape and the fluorescent light, and add a little pink and yellow,' says Melissa Harvey of Arlington, a graphic designer for WETA who spent 45 hours over two weekends on the diorama.

'Last year we were walking through Chinatown, and we ate dinner at this restaurant and I saw all these chickens hanging in the window,' says Betty Thompson, of Ocean Pines. 'I took a pictured and painted it. I just loved the chickens.'

2009 FINALIST: “Chinatown's Lucky Dragon Dancers Perform ‘Goodbye Year of the Rat; Hello Year of the Peeples’ ”

In 2009, we received several dioramas depicting the Suleman octuplets, but this one by Gwen Jones of Richmond bowled us over with its precision. 'The octuplet story was funny itself, but the thing that struck me most was they coded all the kids 'A' to 'G' because they thought there were seven in there,' says Jones, a homemaker and freelance graphic designer.

2009 FINALIST: "Oh My Peep! There's an 'H' in There!"

Brady Gordon, LeElaine Comer and Justin Donnelly of Washington created this finalist diorama. Memorializing the "Miracle on the Hudson " water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in January, the diorama stood out for its craftsmanship and topicality. "We thought it was the most memorable image from the past year," says Gordon, a researcher.

Mark Rivetti of Silver Spring harnessed the multicolored dynamism of Peeps in the labyrinthine black-and-white geometry of Escher's original work 'Relativity.' 'The most important part of the model was building it to the scale of the bunny,' says Rivetti, an architect.

EMBARGOED UNTIL MARCH 28 'Peepville' Peeps from all holidays come together in this homage to Farmville – a popular game on an even more popular social network site. Peep ghosts make up the face of the cows, original peep heads are painted black and covered with fur to form sheep, Halloween pumpkins grow in the garden and Christmas trees form a hedge around the orchard, while the Halloween cat guards the barn and peep swans swim in the pond.
