This year's winning diorama, which depicts the dramatic <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/12/AR2010101206452.html" TARGET="_blank">rescue of 33 mine workers</a> in Copiapo, Chile, last October, is the work of Mary Jo Ondrejka from Reston; Bryn Metzdorf from Fairfax; and Margaret Hartka from Parkton, Md. The rock formation started as a cardboard box; the team added layers of papier-mache, spray insulation, and fleck stone spray paint, plus implanted details such as miniature seashells and faux gemstones. Two miners remain underground as another is hauled to safety.

FINALIST: "In Wake of Historic Storm, Repair Work Under Control, Peepco Spokesperson Says"

This diorama documents Pepco's troubles during <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/pepco-dominion-virginia-power-bge-work-to-turn-lights-back-on-after-snowstorm/2011/01/28/ABRed5Q_story.html" TARGET="_blank">this past winter's power outages</a>, and was created by Chris Schwartz, Brady Gordon and David Rosenblatt, from Washington; and Karin French, of Takoma Park. "We're on the side of the poor Peepco workers who are trying desperately to make the situation right," Schwartz says. Team members Elliot Seibert of Washington and Claudine Roshanian of Vienna chose Metro transit woes as the theme for this finalist diorama. "Angry Peeps"

We received several variations on the <a href="http://voices.washingtonpost.com/blog-post/2011/03/angry_birds_facebook_and_you_u.html" TARGET="_blank">Angry Birds</a> theme, but this one by Peter and Susan Hmel of Gaithersburg was our favorite.

"Cherry Blossom Peeps"

Katie Behr-Szustakowski from Arlington and Alexandra Sandlin from Vienna depict <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/gog/cherry-blossom-festival-2011/index.html" TARGET="_blank">Washington's annual rite of spring</a>. Peeps in paddleboats circle the Tidal Basin as tourist Peeps look on from the Jefferson Memorial (which features working illumination).

"Peep Paw with Globe"

Katie Burkhardt from Chesterfield, Va., took inspiration from M.C. Escher's "<a href="http://www.google.com/images?q=m.c.+escher+%22hand+with+globe%22&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=840" TARGET="_blank">Hand with Globe</a>." The paw is made of clay, paint and colored sugar; the wood circle is decorated with acrylic paint and a flattened Peep.

"Peeps in Purgatory"

Phyllis Mayes, who was a 2010 finalist for her "<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/peeps-show-iv/2010/03/26/AFoDO7LD_gallery.html#photo=2" TARGET="_blank">Creating a Masterpeeps</a>" diorama, went back to the arts for her entry this year. The Silver Spring resident's <a href="http://www.google.com/images?q=Hieronymus+Bosch&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=840" TARGET="_blank">Hieronymus Bosch</a>-inspired creation features Peeps, clay and twigs.

"Peep Purloins Priceless Paintings"

Elly Zupko from Baltimore recreated the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/20/AR2010052000880.html" TARGET="_blank">May 2010 theft</a> from the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris. Security guards are unaware as a sneaky Peep makes off with masterpieces -- each altered to include Peeps.

Constantia Rioux from College Park, with Sean Eustis and Kevin Hollenbeck, created this diorama. "Spinal Peep's rise to the top of the rock charts was abruptly cut off when the band found itself lacking the financial resources to mount a legal battle against rival band Spinal Tap," Rioux told us in her entry.

Our fourth annual Washington Post Peeps Diorama Contest drew more than 1,100 sugar-inspired entries. See the winner -- a candy-colored take on the movie "Up" -- and 37 of our favorites...

FINALIST: Double Peep Strike by Brady Gordon, LeElaine Comer and Justin Donnelly, Washington. Memorializing the 'Miracle on the Hudson ' water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in January, the diorama stood out for its craftsmanship and topicality. 'We thought it was the most memorable image from the past year,' says Gordon, 28, a researcher.
