The monument war: Frank Gehry’s Eisenhower Memorial Revered architect Frank Gehry’s design for a memorial to President Dwight D. Eisenhower has come under fire from critics and the Eisenhower family.
Famed architect Frank Gehry at Gehry Partners LLP in Los Angeles. In 2008, he decided to enter the competition to design the memorial to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He won, and in March 2010, he unveiled a design that won the memorial commission’s unanimous approval.

Eisenhower, on the day he was named supreme commander of the allied forces in Western Europe in 1943. Part of the challenge of designing the memorial was to honor Eisenhower’s dual careers: general and president.

The site chosen for the memorial sits in front of the Department of Education south of the Mall and across from the National Air and Space Museum, Gehry’s plans call for sculptural forms and metal tapestries in a parklike setting. Complicating the design is Maryland Avenue SW, which divides the four-acre site.
