Your Turn: Reader reaction

More reader reaction to “25 Moments That Shaped Washington” in the Dec. 4 issue, by Marc Fisher.

Colleen M. Cannon, Fairfax: Large-scale terrorism struck our home town, and the only long-term impact you can write of is increased security and ID checks? Where is your heart? We lost family, co-workers and friends that day.

Julie Taylor, Washington: Michelle Rhee? What a joke! Rhee has come and gone, but The Post continues to be one of her biggest cheerleaders. Will it ever end?

Michael R. Klein, board chairman, Shakespeare Theatre Company: Several of the milestones in the Washington Post Magazine’s list of important changes to Washington over the past 25 years focused on changes in the Penn Quarter neighborhood, particularly Abe Pollin’s decision to build the MCI Center in what your article described as a “then-dormant area.”

The Shakespeare Theatre Company, whose board of trustees I chair, and its artistic director, Michael Kahn, are also celebrating 25th anniversaries this season. Notably, it was five years before Mr. Pollin’s great decision that STC moved to the Lansburgh Theatre, when the neighborhood was not yet desirable. Shortly thereafter, a then-unknown chef, José Andrés, opened the restaurant Jaleo next door.

I respectfully submit that our mutual investments in Penn Quarter began the renewal that was fulfilled when Mr. Pollin opened the MCI Center. Thus, without in any way seeking to diminish Mr. Pollin’s great contributions, I submit that Michael Kahn and José Andrés should be acknowledged among the true pioneers of Penn Quarter’s revitalization.

STC is proud to have played a role in D.C.’s development in the past 25 years, and grateful for the dedication of the countless local supporters who have made it possible.
