While Slavin was attracted to some of the scenes for their visual values, some have personal meaning for him. This photo was made in Big Sur, a mountainous region in California, where he and his fiancée fell in love.

“The beautiful thing about nature and the way the cosmos works is that it seems like you can never map it out, but there are patterns and ways of knowing,” he says.

“Redwoods”
Slavin says many of his most successful frames came from the seemingly mundane scenes. For example, uncurling the back-bending redwoods in your mind to see the original situation yields a run-of-the-mill nature shot. “You have to give over to creative process and not over-think things even if the art is cerebral,” he says.

The bold, vivid colors and bright lighting scheme come from Slavin’s careful planning and observation of lighting conditions. He sometimes returns to the same location several times to get just the right quality of light.

Slavin is now directing a few projects as well as continuing his series of panoramas. He will start a cross-country tour in July to impress his style on landmarks across the United States. He is thinking about stopping by the St. Louis Arch, the Grand Canyon and the Seattle Space Needle.
