Gardner, often overshadowed by his former employer Matthew Brady, was one of the last people to photograph Abraham Lincoln.
This photo of Abraham Lincoln, traditionally called "Last Photograph of Lincoln From Life" (though it may not have been precisely the last) was taken by Alexander Gardner on Feb. 5, 1865. This photo was long thought to have been made on April 10, 1865, but more recent research has indicated the earlier date in February. The image shows a crack in the original negative, which was broken and discarded back in 1865. The original surviving print is at the National Portrait Gallery. Alexander Gardner Buy Photo
