At Golden Globes, ladies in red dominate the fashion scene

January 12, 2014

Ladies in red commanded the crowd’s attention Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, smoldering in shades of crimson, cherry and deep scarlet on the red carpet of the Golden Globes.

Lupita Nyong’o of “12 Years a Slave” validated the fashion forecasters who predicted her red-carpet dominance in 2014. The caped Ralph Lauren gown in a Crayola primary looked regal, elevated by androgynous cropped hair and minimal accessories.

Emma Watson was equally elegant in a draped dress-and-pant combo by Christian Dior, complete with suede heels and soft chignon.

Amy Adams’s plunging neckline harked to the ’70s-evoking work of “American Hustle” costume designer Michael Wilkinson, the role that earned Adams a best-actress award for a comedy or musical. Adams also kept her accessories muted, shedding a cape upon arrival to reveal the two-toned Valentino.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus similarly went minimal with a haltered Narciso Rodriguez that softly hugged the “Veep” actress’s curves.

Kerry Washington continued the caped look with a ruffled Balenciaga that floated beautifully away from her baby bump.

Peplum ruffles were also a distinguishing feature for Emilia Clarke, who chose a black-and-white printed Proenza Schouler.

Best-supporting-actress winner Jennifer Lawrence (“American Hustle”) — whose arrival seemed most anticipated by red-carpet commentators — broke up a white strapless Dior with thin, black ribbons — standing out among the rubies of the red carpet.
