David Benson uses a diluted acid solution to clean the outside of his giant acorn in his yard in Raleigh, N.C., in preparation for the dropping of the big nut on New Year's Eve. Benson is the sculptor who made the copper acorn in 1991, and he cleans it every year. The large acorn is lowered from a crane at midnight simultaneously with the big ball in New York City. One of Raleigh's nicknames is "The City of Oaks."
