On those special Sunday afternoons when the red carpets are unfurled, Hollywood basks in its 1 percent status. Profusions of rhinestones and princess-style trains usually make the Golden Globes an over-the-top affair. Austerity and simplicity were the hallmarks of many looks, creating a parade of relatively sleek gowns fit for the somber mood of global uncertainty. — Katherine Boyle
