Golden Globe fashion: Austerity vs. flamboyance
On those special Sunday afternoons when the red carpets are unfurled, Hollywood basks in its 1 percent status. Profusions of rhinestones and princess-style trains usually make the Golden Globes an over-the-top affair. Yet Hollywood revealed a divided fashion philosophy this year, with some savvy starlets choosing, amid widespread unemployment, not to dress like French dauphines. Many chose to wear gowns in bruised hues of black, blue and purple, with minimal frill and beadwork. Austerity and simplicity were the hallmarks of many looks, creating a parade of relatively sleek gowns fit for the somber mood of global uncertainty. — Katherine Boyle
