Yahoo confirmed Monday that Katie Couric will be joining the online giant as “global news anchor” in 2014. She will conduct interviews with newsmakers and oversee a staff of reporters in her new position.
Yahoo also said Couric, now at ABC News, would continue to host her syndicated TV talk show, “Katie,” although ABC’s parent, Disney Co., which produces the program, has not said whether it intends to renew the two-year-old show.
Couric — whose negotiations with Yahoo were first reported Friday — will be the most famous broadcast journalist and TV personality to take such a prominent spot at a digital news outlet, although not the first. Larry King, formerly of CNN, and Glenn Beck, formerly of Fox News, both appear regularly online.
The move suggests that Couric’s prospects at ABC News, where she has worked since leaving CBS in 2011, were uncertain. Although Couric was briefly a substitute co-host on ABC’s “Good Morning America” last year, she has appeared irregularly on the network.
Couric, 56, was the co-host of the “Today” show on NBC for 15 years. She was the anchor of the “CBS Evening News” from 2006 to 2011.
Her hiring is also a sign of Yahoo’s ambitions in the news and “content” field. In recent weeks, the company has made a series of high-profile hires to beef up its news and information offerings. Among others, it nabbed New York Times tech columnist David Pogue and political reporter Matt Bai from the New York Times magazine.
It has also had a content-sharing partnership with ABC News to cover live events for the past two years. As part of that agreement, Yahoo carries weekly clips of her talk show.

Couric, also in a statement, said, “Joining Yahoo offers a tremendous opportunity to reach people all around the world in the way that they’re using and consuming media today.”
Yahoo operates one of the most heavily visited suite of Web sites on the Internet, with more than 190 million unique visitors in July, according to the ComScore tracking firm.
