Kennedy Center Honors 2012

An actor, a ballerina, a blues musician, a TV host and some legendary rockers are this year’s Kennedy Center Honors recipients.

Actor Dustin Hoffman, one of seven nominees, is “one of the most versatile and iconoclastic actors of this or any other generation,” said the Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein.

“David Letterman is one of the most influential personalities in the history of television,” said Rubenstein, who announced the host of the “Late Show” as a nominee.

Ballerina Natalia Makarova left her native Russia in 1970 and that year debuted in the title role of “Giselle” with the American Ballet Theatre. She “has ignited the stages of the world’s greatest ballet companies and continues to pass the torch to the next generation of dancers,” Rubenstein said.

The rock band Led Zeppelin — from left, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page — “transformed the sound of rock-and-roll with their lyricism and innovative song structures,” Rubenstein said.

Blues musician Buddy Guy, a six-time Grammy award winner, “has influenced virtually everyone who has picked up an electric guitar in the last half-century,” Rubenstein said.
