Michael Douglas will take on the role of Liberace for a biopic film on the legendary pianist, HBO confirmed Tuesday. The feature, titled “Behind the Candelabra,” is scheduled to begin production next summer, under the direction of Steven Soderbergh.
Soderbergh’s involvement with the film has solidified his role in Hollywood, says Lisa de Moraes of The TV Column:
(Dave Allocca/AP) - Actors Matt Damon, left, and Michael Douglas are shown at the after party for the film \"Contagion,\" in New York. Douglas and Damon will star as Liberace and Scott Thorson for HBO's its upcoming biopic.
Steven Soderbergh continues to be the go-to director for all things Las Vegas — HBO announced Tuesday it’s bought his Liberace biopic.
Moraes also notes the idea has been in the works for years, as well as the names of the actors who may be involved:
The project – now called “Behind the Candelabra — has been kicking around for a couple years — Google it, you’ll see stories about it from 2009 that announced the casting of Michael Douglas as the legendary pianist/entertainer, and Matt Damon his lover, Scott Thorson, with whom he had a tempestuous relationship.
Matt Damon will play Scott Thorson, Liberace’s younger, live-in lover. Prior to the project, the actors had not been cast in the same piece, says Jen Chaney of Celebritology:
The project marks the first time the actors will work together, though both have experience with Soderbergh. The filmmaker directed Douglas in “Traffic” and has teamed up with Damon on the “Ocean’s” films, “The Informant!” and “Contagion.”
HBO has not announced an air date for the production.
