On Love: Danielle McCamey weds Steven Smith
& Steven Smith
Danielle McCamey, 31, is a nurse practitioner. Steven Smith, 32, is an administrator at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. They live in Alexandria.
Wedding date: Nov. 3, 2012
Location: Beloved Hotel, Playa Mujeres, Mexico
How they met: In early 2006, Smith awoke in the recovery room after ankle surgery at Georgetown University Hospital and started flirting with McCamey. She ignored his advances and explained the nurse-patient relationship. Once discharged, Smith, on crutches, managed to make it through restricted areas to look for McCamey. He gave her his number, which she accepted “with no thoughts of ever calling.” Six months later, they met again at a mutual friend’s party, which led to a first date at Busboys and Poets. They grew close over their love of Latin dancing and willingness for adventure but didn’t get serious for another two years, when they “were both ready for a commitment,” McCamey said.
The proposal: They had planned to go museum-hopping Dec. 14, 2011, but when a black town car appeared at their house, McCamey knew something was up. Their first stop was the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial. As they read the quotes on the walls, Smith got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Smith had another surprise: The car took them to the airport, where they boarded a flight for Miami to celebrate their engagement.
The wedding: At a welcome bonfire the night before, guests received T-shirts and luggage tags. A beach-front wedding ceremony and cocktails were followed by dinner in one of the resort’s restaurants. The couple’s first-dance medley began and ended with Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” with snippets of Miguel’s “Adorn” and Romeo Santos’s “Promise.”
The honeymoon: Because they spent less than a week in Playa Mujeres, they plan to go “someplace warm” next fall.
