How they met: Garcia and Wiseman became friends while working at the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. They became more than just friends in April 2009, when Wiseman invited Garcia for dinner at Hank’s Oyster Bar in Dupont Circle. Seven months later, they met one another’s families and moved in together.
The proposal: In October 2010, Wiseman asked Garcia to meet him at Hank’s Oyster Bar, the scene of their first date. After their meal, she was so surprised to see that her mother, father, brother and his mother had gathered outside the restaurant that she barely realized Wiseman was down on one knee, ring box in hand. As he got up and the couple kissed, customers seated on the patio at Hank’s and the adjacent restaurant greeted them with a chorus of congratulations.
The wedding: After a ceremony at Alexandria’s Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where Garcia’s mother is the grade-school principal, guests enjoyed cocktails and a buffet dinner at McLean Gardens Ballroom. Mini cupcakes, two of them labeled the couple’s nicknames for each other — Mr. Awesome and Mrs. Awesome — stood in for a traditional wedding cake. As favors, the couple gave out apothecary jars filled with Garcia’s favorite Swedish Fish and small bottles of cinnamon-infused bourbon made by Wiseman. Their first dance as a married couple was to “My Best Friend” by Weezer. At the end of the evening, guests were treated to a late-night snack, courtesy of Popped! Republic, a gourmet popcorn food truck.
The honeymoon: They vacationed for a week in Jamaica’s Montego Bay, where they relaxed, played shuffleboard and drank fruity concoctions on the beach.
