Film: Buster Keaton retrospective

Keaton’s “The Play House,” “Convict 13,” “Hard Luck” and “The Electric House” are among the silent movies to be shown in March at the McLean Community Center’s Alden Theatre. The restored silent films will have live musical accompaniment by composer Ben Model.

Museums: Anacostia Community Museum

Gary Hedgepeth, who grew up in Anacostia, is seen visiting the waterfront park to feed the sea gulls in a photograph that is part of “Reclaiming the Edge,” the exhibition portion of an ongoing research project on urban waterways. The project was initiated by the Anacostia Community Museum in 2010 and adopted by the Smithsonian Institution as one of its Grand Challenge efforts.

Classical music: ‘Norma’

Washington National Opera will present Bellini’s “Norma,” the classic bel canto story about a Druid priestess, starring Angela Meade, March 9-24.

The artist, whose distinctive vocal vocabulary sounds as fresh and original today as it did in the 1960s, is coming to the Clarice Smith Center with her latest evening-length performance piece, “On Behalf of Nature,” on May 4.

Family: ‘Intergalactic Nemesis’

"Intergalactic Nemesis," a traditional radio show — complete with actors performing multiple characters and inventive sound effects — gets a visual update with enlarged comic-book pages serving as a backdrop. It runs May 17-19 at the Kennedy Center Family Theater.

Family: Fanciful Heroes

This image of Saint George is one that children will be searching for at the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens during the preschool series that allows children to explore parts of the mansion to look for paintings and statues of heroes and heroines.

Dance: Mark Morris Dance Group

The world-renowned company presents a program including “The Office,” set to music by Dvorak, and “Festival Dance,” set to Hummel’s Piano Trio No. 5 in E. At George Mason University, Center for the Arts Concert Hall. Feb. 8-9.

"Politics in an Oyster House" (1848) by the Baltimore artist, who studied and worked in Europe and died young from an opium overdose, is among his works that will be on display at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

"The Sailor's Wedding" (1852) is another piece in the Walters exhibition (March 10-June 2) of Woodville's works. The show brings together all of his paintings, including works that have never been seen in public, plus work by other contemporary artists, in what should be a fascinating glimpse into pre-Civil War American artistic and social life — and another chance to grapple with an artistic style that has only recently been given new scrutiny and respect by academic art circles.

"Number 7, 1952" will be featured in the Phillips Collection’s “Angels, Demons, and Savages: Pollock, Ossorio, Dubuffet,” an exhibiton that explores the connection between the American painter Jackson Pollock and the French artist Jean Dubuffet, using the lesser-known figure of Alfonso Ossorio as linchpin (Feb. 9-May 12).

"Untitled" (1951) is an oil and sand on masonite work by Ossorio, who was born in the Philippines, was a resident of the Hamptons for much of his life, and was a wealthy collector and substantial artist in his own right.

The works of Leon Bakst, including this costume for a little god from “Le Dieu bleu,” is part of the a glitzy show of art, design and costumes from the Ballets Russes on display at the National Gallery of Art.

Leon Bakst design for Vaslav Nijinsky as the faun from "L'Apres-midi d'un Faune." The National Gallery raised the ceiling of its East Building galleries to accommodate two huge theatrical paintings for the Ballets Russes exhibit. The exhibition will be one of the rare National Gallery shows to include a substantial multimedia component, with visual material punctuated by music and film.

"Tuft of Cowslips" (1526) is part of a major exhibition of Durer’s works on paper on display at the National Gallery of Art.

"Self-Portrait at Thirteen" (1484) is a work by one of the first international art stars of the Renaissance. The National Gallery’s exhibition, opening in March, includes more than 100 works on paper from the Albertina Museum in Vienna, supplemented by holdings from the NGA.
