"I feel so comfortable with Julien,” Grunberg said. “He makes getting up everyday a joy. I didn't expect this, it just happened. We've never had a single disagreement."

Shirley and Arthur, both 90, have been together since they were 16 and got married on Valentine's Day in 1942. This Valentine's Day will mark their 70th wedding anniversary. When asked what the secret to their longevity was, they said "partnership." They said that they've been partners in everything they've done.

"I love how calming and entertaining [animals] are," said Washington Humane Society Shelter Manager Lexi Lepiarz as she spends time with Gilbert Grape, pictured inside the cage, and Fe Fe, two cats at the shelter on Georgia Avenue NW in Washington. "It's really rewarding in the end," said Lepiarz, who is never sad to see the animals leave the shelter. Until they do, Lepiarz loves them as her own. "They all need it so much."
