Martha McSally, the first female fighter pilot in U.S. military history and the first woman to command a fighter squadron, is running for Gabrielle Giffords’s seat in the House of Representatives. She will face incumbent Rep. Ron Barber (D), who worked as Giffords’s district director and was severely injured in the Jan. 8, 2011, gun attack in which Giffords was shot in the head; he was voted into the position earlier this year in a special election.
