7 “Thunder Soul” reunites Houston’s legendary Kashmere High School Stage Band after more than 35 years to play a tribute concert for 92-year-old “Prof,” their bandleader, who broke the color barrier and transformed the school’s struggling jazz band into a funk powerhouse.
7 “Toast.” Young Nigel Slater loves his mother even though she is a hopeless cook, frequently making him a mere piece of toast. When she dies of asthma, he is whisked away to the countryside to live with his distant father and stepmother, Joan, who is a superb cook. Joan becomes Nigel’s rival in the kitchen as he takes up cooking class and competes to find the way to his father’s heart.

7 “The Way.” Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who arrives in France to collect the remains of his adult son (Emilio Estevez), killed in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago. Tom decides to embark on the same journey to honor and remember his son, meeting people along the way.
13 The sixth annual “Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival” features more than 40 international films from the horror genre, including “Helldriver,” “The Afflicted” and the North American premiere of “Mr. Bricks: A Heavy Metal Murder Musical.” Through Oct. 16.

14 “Blackthorn.” Legend has it that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military. In this movie version, Cassidy (Sam Shepard) survives but is derailed from his journey home to the United States by an encounter with an ambitious criminal (Eduardo Noriega).
