Dulles’s new welcome mat
After an interminable flight from an exotic land, you may be too bleary-eyed to notice the changes at Washington Dulles’s international arrivals facility. So CoGo, free of jet lag, did the looking for you.
Dulles, which turns 50 this year, has significantly expanded its International Arrivals Building, your first stop in reentering the United States. The multiyear project doubled the size of the Arrivals Inspection Hall and the baggage claim area, to about 400,000 square feet; increased the number of customs inspection stations to 50; and installed six baggage carousels that can handle about 300 pieces at once, easing the luggage jam.
In all, the terminal can now accommodate 2,400 passengers an hour, up from 1,400. With this year’s addition of new carriers (e.g., Porter to Toronto, Aeromexico to Mexico City) and service (United to Dublin and Manchester, England), the extra space is much appreciated.
What your tired eyes might also miss: the new artwork. In baggage claim, four suspended lens sculptures by Ray King shimmer like tiny airplane wings touched by the sun. On the back wall, a vibrant abstract work by Mikyoung Kim highlights the area’s greener side, including references to the official trees of the District (scarlet oak), Virginia (flowering dogwood) and Maryland (white oak).
Flash-sale roundup
Flash-sale sites flicker all around the Internet like fireflies. But a new Web site has collected many of them under one URL, making it easier to net the deals.
EveryLodge follows the aggregator model by c orralling deals from a number of major flash-sale sites, such as SniqueAway, LivingSocial and Jetsetter. The company organizes the listings under Ongoing Sales and Upcoming Sales, with a map highlighting the specific trips plus the expiration date of the sale. For example, on Thursday, the 114 offerings in the Ongoing Sales category included La Maltese Estate in Thira, Greece, for $243 a night (51 percent savings) at Groupon Getaways and the Chelsea in Atlantic City for $85 a night (57 percent off) through LivingSocial.
One caveat: To book the deal, you may need to become a member of the purveyor. Info: everylodge.com.
