Details, Christmas at Disney World

details

GETTING THERE

US Airways offers nonstop flights from Reagan National to Orlando, with Christmas week fares currently $191 round trip.

WHERE TO STAY

Fort Wilderness Cabins

407-939-7429

www.disneyworld.disney.go.com

Located on Disney property, with buses connecting the area to the park’s vast transportation hub of bus routes, monorails and boats. A launch at the campground dock runs across the Seven Seas Lagoon to the Magic Kingdom. Cabins, which officially sleep up to six, are $450 a night in December.

WHERE TO EAT

Whispering Canyon Cafe

Disney Wilderness Lodge

407-939-3463

The dining options are limitless at Disney, but we enjoyed our Christmas dinner at this boisterous, family-friendly-but-with-cocktails option. Entrees start at $16.

Goodings Supermarket

Crossroads Shopping Center

Lake Buena Vista

407-827-1200

We bought our provisions at the local Winn-Dixie, but several campground veterans subsequently told us that this nearby grocery is a longtime favorite because it will deliver to the campground for a fee. You can place your order up to a year in advance.

WHAT TO DO

Basic admission to the Disney theme parks begins at $85 a day for anyone 10 and up, and $79 a day for kids ages 3 to 9. But a variety of passes are more flexible, letting you visit multiple parks a day over multiple days in various combinations. Those Park Hopper passes begin at $120 a day for anyone 10 and up, and $114 a day for kids ages 3 to 9.

The special holiday events at Disney World — parades, displays, performers, etc — are too numerous to list. We had two favorites:

Candlelight Processional at Epcot

www.disneyworld.disney.go.com

This year’s celebrity readers for this Christmas story extravaganza include Susan Lucci, Blair Underwood and Marlee Matlin. Three times daily, Nov. 25 through Dec. 30. Free.

Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Hollywood Studios

www.disneyworld.disney.go.com

You’ve never seen a lights display as vast as this one, which blankets a huge stretch of the Hollywood Studios fake cityscape, to wonderful effect. Nightly, Nov. 10 – Jan. 7. Free.
