For my Jersey Shore Recovery tour, I started on Long Beach Island, about 200 miles from Washington. From Interstate 95 north, take I-295 north to Route 70 east. Follow Route 72 east to the island. For the northern beaches, I drove up the coast using primarily routes 35 and 36.

The Chicken or the Egg

LBI institution open 24 hours, with all-day breakfast. Packed menu heavy on chicken (nachos, salads, wings, waffles, fried, soy, etc.) and egg (sandwiches, platters, with steak, etc.) dishes. From $7.

California-cool joint in Pier Village serves burritos, tacos, rice bowls, quesadillas and salads. From about $4.
WHAT TO DO
Fantasy Island Amusement Park
320 Seventh St., Beach Haven
Arcade opens daily at noon and rides at 6 p.m, except on Fridays for Pay One Price Day ($12.50 each for rides from 4 to 7 p.m.). Closes around 11 p.m. or midnight. Season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Tokens are 85 cents each.

Seven miles of ocean beaches, salt marshes, hiking trails and a maritime holly forest. Also Fort Hancock, Nike Missle Radar Site and Sandy Hook Lighthouse. Open 5 a.m.-8 p.m. $15 per-car admission from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
