Bryce Resort, in Basye, Va., is about 120 miles from Washington. Take Interstate 66 west to Interstate 81 south. Take Exit 273 to Mount Jackson. Turn left onto Virginia Route 292/Conicville Road. Turn right onto U.S. Route 11. Turn right onto Virginia Route 263/Orkney Grade. After about 11 miles, the entrance to the resort will be on the right.

Chain hotels are plentiful along the I-81 corridor, including in nearby Mount Jackson, Woodstock and New Market.

Casual dining with a view of the slopes. Has the same menu as the adjacent restaurant, but you’ll feel less conspicuous in roughed-up clothing. Sandwiches and entrees from $10.
First-time grass skiers and mountain boarders must take a mandatory lesson, offered Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 12-2 p.m., for $35 (includes lesson, lift ticket, skis or board, pads and helmet). Summer tubing ($12 per session) is 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Zip line tours ($45) are Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday-Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
