On Love: Erika Barry and Sam Edelstein
Erika Barry & Sam Edelstein
Erika Barry, 30, is operations manager at D.C. Prep Charter School. Sam Edelstein, 27, is a communications associate for Cultural Tourism D.C. They live in Northeast Washington.
Wedding date: April 8
Location: Woodend Sanctuary, Chevy Chase
How they met: Two mutual friends thought Barry and Edelstein would be a good match and arranged for the foursome to meet at Millie & Al’s, an Adams Morgan bar, in May 2008. “There was instant chemistry,” Edelstein said. Two weeks later, they went to Jazz in the Sculpture Garden followed by dinner at Ella’s. After dating six months, Barry persuaded Edelstein to make a change with her; they got jobs teaching English for a year in South Korea.
The proposal: Last November, Edelstein suggested they take their dog for an after-work walk. As they took a break on a bench, Edelstein told her loved her and asked her to marry him. But he didn’t give her his great-grandmother’s ring until they returned home; he’d worried he might lose it on the way.
The wedding: Barry’s mother’s cancer diagnosis prompted them to fast-track the wedding. They were able to reserve the location and plan the event within a few months. Each table was named after a place that was special to them, including Songtan, South Korea. The couple took waltz lessons to prepare for their first dance to “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones. Acknowledging Easter Sunday, they gave guests colored plastic eggs to fill with jelly beans as they left the reception.
The honeymoon: The couple plans to travel to Costa Rica in July for a trip combining adventure and relaxation.
