Melissa Smith, 26, is a legislative aide for a government relations firm. Trey Evans, 29, is a software developer. They live in Baltimore City.
Wedding date: Oct. 22
Location: Gramercy Mansion B&B, Stevenson, Md.
Guests: 75
How they met: In June 2009, Smith and Evans attended a Young Democrats of Maryland tailgate party at Camden Yards. At the Orioles-Nationals game that followed, they wound up sitting on either side of a mutual friend, who introduced them. Neither can remember anything about the baseball game because they were so busy talking. A few days later, they met for dinner at P.F. Chang’s.
The proposal: A year later, Evans called Smith to help him get a few things from his car; they had recently moved and were still unpacking. The first thing he handed her was a suit — and she noticed the engagement ring hooked over the hanger. Evans told Smith it had been the happiest year of his life and that he would be honored if she would be his wife.
The wedding: The couple wrote their own vows and had a friend officiate at the ceremony. During the event, Smith and Evans read a statement supporting everyone’s right to wed. A buffet brunch with a bloody mary bar was served in the B&B’s garden.
The honeymoon: They spent a week in Florence, Italy, exploring the city and finding off-the-tourist-path places to dine.
