On Love: Sarah Burns weds Adam Williams
Sarah Burns & Adam Williams
Sarah Burns, 27, is a strategic planner for the Defense Information Systems Agency. Adam Williams, 25, is an aviation mechanic in the U.S. Navy. They live in Annapolis.
Wedding date: Oct. 15
Location: Westin Hotel, Alexandria
How they met: In September 2009, Williams was singing Sublime’s “Santeria” at Rock It Grill, a karaoke bar in Old Town. Burns couldn’t take her eyes off him; Williams noticed her from the stage and introduced himself after he finished his song. They chatted and made a date for dinner the following week.
The proposal: To celebrate their one-year anniversary, Williams and Burns dined at Gadsby’s Tavern. After the meal, Williams asked Burns to walk with him down to the waterfront. While admiring the view of the Capitol across the water from a gazebo, Williams got down on bended knee and slipped a ring on her finger.
The wedding: When he was given a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, Burns’s father was told he had just 15 years to live; 19 years later, he walked his daughter down the aisle. In gratitude and instead of giving favors to guests, Burns and Williams made a donation of $750 to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation of the National Capital Area (guests contributed an additional $350). Rather than carrying flowers, Burns and her mother fashioned a bouquet from her grandmothers’ jewelry and her father’s Marine Corps insignia.
The honeymoon: The couple went on a skiing vacation to Quebec.
