Turkey Chase turns 30
Another venerable Maryland road race celebrates a milestone this month: The YMCA Turkey Chase 10K reaches its 30th anniversary on Thanksgiving Day.

The Bethesda race began in 1982 with 200 runners. Last year 9,036 ran, and the Y is hoping for 10,000 this year. (Registration is open until Nov. 21.) The largest 10K held in Montgomery County each year, the run has generated $2 million for the YMCA Bethesda and the Bethesda Rotary Club Foundation, according to spokeswoman Jackie Dilworth.
Seven inches of snow failed to stop the race in 1989. After Sept. 11, 2001, many participants ran with American flags. And last year, the race held its first satellite 10K on a military base in Kabul, where 200 service members participated. To sign up, go to Turkey Chase.
