Perhaps it’s the attention that comes with being the National Zoo’s home, but Washingtonians seem to have a special place for animals. From pandas to bears, and the occasional owl, here are some that garnered the attention of the city.
The Smithsonian National Zoo put out an all-points bulletin via Twitter on June 24, 2013, after one of its racoon-like red pandas, Rusty, went missing. Zoo staff members searched trees and neighborhoods for the missing critter. Rusty was later found in an Adams Morgan neighborhood, and zoo officials say it's "highly likely" he escaped through tree canopy. Abby Wood/AFP/Getty Images Buy Photo
