A day-care director has been charged with physically assaulting two children under her care.
Arousha Shahin, 39, who runs the SMILE Day Care in the Manassas area, was arrested Friday. Prince William police said that they responded to an anonymous tip and that after investigating, they charged Shahin with assaulting a 5-year old girl and a 6-year-old boy.
The facility is not listed in the state’s online directory of licensed and regulated unlicensed child-care providers. The list includes certified preschools and religious exempt day-care facilities.
Shahin, who was being held for $10,000 bond, appeared in court Monday. She is scheduled to appear in court again Wednesday.

Months after a judge ruled that he could stand trial, a cabdriver accused of shooting and critically wounding an Alexandria police officer early last year has been once again declared incompetent.
Kashif Bashir, who was charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer in the shooting of Officer Peter Laboy, has been remanded to a state hospital for further treatment, according to defense attorneys and prosecutors.
Anita Boss, a forensic psychologist, testified Monday that Bashir was having trouble communicating with his defense attorney. The attorney, Emily Beckman, also told the court that Bashir’s mental health had deteriorated since he left Central State Hospital for the local jail. Circuit Court Judge James C. Clark concluded, over the objections of the commonwealth’s attorney, that further treatment was necessary for Bashir.
Bashir is accused of shooting and wounding Laboy in an apparently random daylight attack in Old Town Alexandria on Feb. 27, 2013. He will be evaluated again for competency in June, when he was initially scheduled to stand trial.
