3 people dead in a house outside Hagerstown

Authorities are investigating the deaths of three people who were found in a house outside of Hagerstown, a Washington County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said Thursday.

Officers found two men and one woman dead in a house outside of Hagerstown shortly after they received a phone call around 4:20 p.m., said Deputy First Class Carly Hose, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

The three were identified Thursday night as Christopher M. Wachter, 23; Kimberly A. Smith, 47, and William F. Smith Jr., 54. Hose said in a prepared statement that Wachter was the son of Kimberly Smith and the stepson of William Smith Jr.

After a preliminary investigation, investigators believe that Smith killed Kimberly Smith and Wachter before shooting himself in the chest.

A shotgun was recovered at the scene, Hose said.

The three died in a red brick home on Dawn Drive in an unincorporated area called Halfway, a residential area dotted with trees and neatly manicured lawns.
