A very varied Christmas, weather-wise, in Washington area

From a meteorological perspective, what Christmas 2012 was like in the Washington area depended, like so many other aspects of life here, on where you were and when you were there.

It was a wet Christmas, a white Christmas, a foggy Christmas and, for some minutes at least,a bright and sunny Christmas.

At Dulles International Aiport, the fog was so thick at one point that the National Weather Service recorded the visibility as zero. That was early in the morning, about 4 a.m., when traffic is usually light, and it had little effect on operations, airport spokeswoman Kimberly Gibbs said.

After Reagan National Airport emerged from the morning mist, the temperature rose to a pleasant, well-above-normal, 51 degrees.

But in northern and western parts of the region, the ground was covered in places with a sparkling inch or two of snow.
