ARLINGTON

These cases were handled by the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, which operates the county animal shelter and provides animal control services to the county. For information or to report emergencies involving animals 24 hours a day, call 703-931-9241 or go to www.awla.org.

Owner issued a summons: S. Fern St., 1200 block, July 2. Arlington County police and the fire department assisted in removing a dog inside a car that registered 104 degrees. As animal control was preparing to impound the dog, the owner arrived.

A bad spot: N. 21st Rd., 4700 block, July 4. Animal control removed a bird that was trapped in a deep window well. The mockingbird was released.

Not a fireworks fan: S. Columbia Pike, 5500 block, July 4. An animal control officer captured a dog running loose and took it to the shelter where it was claimed by an owner. The dog had escaped from a back yard when it was frightened by fireworks.

Slithering upstairs: S. Crystal Dr., 2400 block, July 5. Animal control picked up a black rat snake inside a stairwell and moved the reptile outside.
