By ,

Homeless cats and dogs impacted by Hurricane Sandy are due to arrive in the District Monday afternoon for treatment and adoption.

The animals, who were abandoned during the storm, surrendered by their owners or stray, are being transported from New York City, where they have been residing in temporary shelters, officials from the Washington Animal Rescue League said.

Officials said that many of the animals have been cared for by WARL staff members who have been on site in New York following Sandy at the request of the ASPCA.

The animals will receive medical and behavioral evaluations, and will be eventually be put up for adoption.
