A baby was born on the side of I-270 in Germantown on Friday morning. The mother and baby are both doing well, according to the Montgomery County Fire Department.

Montgomery County Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Pete Piringer said the mother and her husband were en route to the hospital but pulled over on I-270 near Middlebrook Road when they realized the baby was on its way. They called for help, but the baby was already born by the time emergency medical personnel arrived.

“By the time all the guys got there, Dad — well, Mom and Dad — had done all the work,” Piringer said.

“Life in the fast lane,” Piringer commented. “Well, maybe the slow lane. I don’t know.”
