The victim was identified as Julisa Washington, 22, of Southeast Washington, who was found covered by a blanket with apparent fatal stab wounds, officials said. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Detectives arrested Stefon Kirkpatrick, 23, of Southwest Washington and charged him with murder two while armed, said Gwendolyn Crump, a spokeswoman.

Multiple officials with knowledge of the investigation said Washington and Kirkpatrick were dating; police were trying to determine a motive for the fatal stabbing.

The police spokeswoman would only say that the victim was unconscious and not breathing. A D.C. fire department spokesman said the woman was pronounced dead on the scene.

The body was found about four blocks from a District fire station that houses Engine 33.
