Capitol rotunda set to reopen Thursday, after installation of safety net for restoration project

The U.S. Capitol rotunda will reopen for tours Thursday, the Architect of the Capitol’s office said Tuesday.

The rotunda, which has been closed for much of this month to prepare for a Capitol dome restoration project, was scheduled to reopen Tuesday, but a last-minute hitch forced a postponement, a spokesman for the Architect said.

The rotunda — the majestic, domed, circular room at the center of the Capitol — has been closed while workers install safety netting to protect visitors from falling debris during the ongoing project to restore the building’s cast iron dome.
