A man was arrested in the Occupy D.C. encampment Wednesday morning after a 13-month-old girl was found alone in a tent, authorities said.
The man, whom authorities did not identify, was charged with attempted second-degree cruelty to children in the incident, which took place about 10:30 a.m., said Sgt. David Schlosser, a U.S. Park Police spokesman.
Protester Kelly Canavan, a retired Prince George’s County schoolteacher, said she had not heard an infant cry in the three months she has lived at the camp. When she heard the sound and realized it was a baby, she said, “I was worried about why it was there” and went with other camp members to investigate. They found the infant wearing a onesie and mittens.
The campers notified authorities and watched over the girl until help arrived, Canavan said. Schlosser said D.C. Fire and EMS workers checked on the baby, who was fine. The infant was placed in the care of the District’s child protective services, he said.
The man was arrested after he returned to the encampment and identified himself to authorities as the child’s father, Schlosser said.
“Mid-40s, rainy, onesie, alone,” said Schlosser, describing the circumstances that led police to arrest the man.
Canavan, 36, said the man was not a familiar face in the camp, which has been in McPherson Square since Oct. 1, and had only pitched his tent this week.
“None of us knew this person,” she said. “It was a despicable, atrocious thing do. Everyone here is revolted by the behavior.”
