5 shot, wounded in District
By Clarence Williams and Martin Weil,
Five people were shot and wounded Friday night at an intersection in the District, police said. One was listed in critical condition.
The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. at North Capitol Street and New York Avenue as the victims were standing on a sidewalk, according to preliminary accounts.
Four victims were men and one was a woman. All five were taken to hospitals. It was not clear who was the most seriously wounded.
The shooting occurred on the northwest corner of the intersection, near where North Capitol Street runs beneath New York Avenue. Both streets are heavily used by commuter traffic.
A resident of nearby Hanover Place NW reported hearing about a half-dozen gunshots. A police account indicated that the shots might have been fired from some distance.
As of late Friday no clear motive had been determined.
One theory being pursued was the possibility that the gunfire was linked to a dispute between neighborhood groups.
