Four victims were men and one was a woman. All five were taken to hospitals. It was not clear who was the most seriously wounded.

The shooting occurred on the northwest corner of the intersection, near where North Capitol Street runs beneath New York Avenue. Both streets are heavily used by commuter traffic.

As of late Friday no clear motive had been determined.

One theory being pursued was the possibility that the gunfire was linked to a dispute between neighborhood groups.
