Authorities say woman was fatally hit by Pr. George’s bus while crossing street

Prince George’s County authorities are investigating a fatal accident in Upper Marlboro on Thursday in which a woman was hit by a Prince George’s County bus while crossing a street.

The woman was hit near Main and Water streets at 10:30 a.m., said Mark Brady, a spokesman for Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services. The victim, identified by authorities as 69-year-old Patsy Stokes Burton of La Plata, was trapped beneath the bus and died at the scene, Brady said.

Brady said witnesses told authorities that Stokes had been trying to cross Main Street from Water Street just before she was struck by the bus.

Cpl. Nate Lewis of the Prince George’s County police said the bus was trying to make a left turn onto Main Street from Water Street before it struck Stokes. Lewis said investigators are not sure whether speed was a factor in the crash.

The county bus involved in the accident is called “The Bus” and is operated by the department of public works and transportation.
