Baby dies after being left in vehicle at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland

September 3, 2014

A 17-month-old child died after his father left him in the back seat of a vehicle and went to work at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River on Wednesday.

A Navy official said in a news release that the baby was unresponsive when he was found at about 3:30 p.m. Emergency responders performed CPR, but the infant was pronounced dead at 4:15.

The news release said that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service was handling the case. An NCIS spokesman said on Wednesday night that the investigation had indicated that the child was left in the car by his father, who works on the base. The spokesman said it was not yet clear how long the child was in the car, or whether the father had forgotten he was there.
