May 1, 2014

A train carrying about 8,000 tons of coal derailed in Bowie early Thursday morning, authorities said.

The CSX train left the tracks a little before 2:30 a.m. near Brady Building at Old Annapolis Road and Laurel Bowie Road, according to Prince George’s fire officials.

Three “locomotives and 10 cars had left the tracks but were still upright, not overturned,” according to a statement from the Prince George’s fire department. “There were no immediate life safety concerns or haz-mat issues.”

The three employees on the train did not get hurt, and CSX will handle clean up, authorities said.
