D.C. police charge Victor Coley in shooting that injured four people in Northeast D.C.

District police have charged a 51-year-old man in connection with a shooting outside a shoe store in Northeast Washington on Wednesday afternoon that wounded four people.

Victor Leon Coley, of Northeast, was charged with assault with intent to kill. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 15 in D.C. Superior Court.

Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman, said the motive for the 1:15 p.m. attack outside a Payless shoe store in the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue NE remains unclear.

A police report says bystanders saw the bald-headed gunman, who was wearing a gray sweat shirt and blue jeans, run into an apartment building around the corner from the store moments after the shooting.

Then, as police descended on the building in the 3500 block of Clay Place NE, the man walked out, the report says. Several witnesses yelled, “That’s him, officer,” according to the report. A victim who was shot in the finger identified the man, as well. “Yeah! That’s him!” the person said, according to the report.

The victims, three men and a woman, were standing in front of the store along a busy street when the shooting occurred. The police reports identifies the men as ages 41, 57 and 61. The woman is 64. Their injuries are all believed to be non-life-threatening.

Police have not said whether any of the victims were targeted. They also have not said whether a gun was recovered.
