D.C. shootings a few blocks apart leave 2 dead, 5 injured

Two men were killed and five other people were wounded in the District on Sunday in two separate shootings a few blocks apart, authorities said.

Police said Donchell Thomas, 21, of Montgomery Village and Derek Price, 20, of District Heights, were both fatally wounded at North Capitol and T Streets NW about 1:20 a.m.

After gunfire was reported there, police arrived to find three people with gunshot wounds in a vehicle. Thomas died Sunday morning, police said. Price died Sunday evening, said D.C. police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump.

No information was available immediately about the third person in the car, who was described only as a juvenile.

A suspect was arrested in the incident, police said. They said Jimmie Fleming, 36, of Northwest Washington was charged with two counts of murder and one of assault with intent to kill.

No details were available about circumstances or motive.

The second shooting occurred about 9 p.m. in the 1700 block of Lincoln Road NE. Police said one man was shot, and bullets grazed three other people.

The first shooting occurred just south of Rhode Island Avenue. The site of the second shooting was a few blocks southeast of the first. But other than their geographical proximity, there was no immediate indication of any link between the two incidents.
