Driver in Fort Washington accident died after flipping SUV, police say

Prince George’s County Police said the driver who died in a fatal two-car collision in Fort Washington on Tuesday struck a car at a traffic light before his vehicle flipped over.

Police released further details Wednesday about the accident that closed a section of Route 210, also know as Indian Head Highway, and Old Fort Road. The driver, identified by authorities Thursday as 47-year-old James Fearing of Accokeek, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Cpl. Maria McKinney, a spokeswoman for the police department, said Fearing was driving his Honda SUV north on Indian Head Highway around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday. The Honda, she said, was approaching the intersection at Old Fort Road when for unknown reasons it struck a Mercedes that was stopped at a traffic light.

McKinney said the impact caused the SUV to flip, fatally injuring Fearing. The driver of the Mercedes was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
