Frederick, Md., man found dead in car trunk

The body of a man who was reported missing last week was found in Montgomery County on Monday in the trunk of his car, and Maryland State Police said he had apparently been slain.

State police said John P. Ryan, 37, of Frederick was found after police discovered his car in a parking lot in the 15000 block of Somerville Drive in the Derwood area. He apparently had suffered an injury, state police said, and an autopsy was to be conducted.

According to the state police, Ryan’s car was found about 2:30 p.m. by an investigator from the Department of Homeland Security. The agent had been assigned to the Frederick County narcotics task force, police said.

Police said Ryan’s wife reported him missing last Thursday to the Frederick police department.

Investigators searched for his car, which was described as a black 2007 Lexus, police said. After it was spotted, the car was brought under police escort to the state police office in Rockville.

A search warrant was obtained, and Ryan’s body was found in the trunk, state police said.

Investigators observed “what appeared to be trauma to the body,” state police said, but details would not be disclosed while the investigation was underway.

Police said cash and what was suspected to be marijuana were also found.

Ryan was a businessman who specialized in property maintenance, police said. They said he traveled on business throughout the Washington region.

No motive in the death has been determined, police said.
