Haymarket man charged in August church fire

A Prince William County man was arrested and charged Thursday in connection with a fire that caused heavy damage to a historic church in the Gainesville area.

The county fire department said Maurice Thomson Michaely of Haymarket is being held on a charge of “burning or destroying a dwelling house” in connection with the Aug. 10 blaze at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

The congregation traces its roots to 1877; its building on Lee Highway was 84 years old.

The damage forced a temporary shift of services to another site. But amid the heartache, there was a cause for satisfaction: Two Bibles were found intact.
