Howard County police officials identified two officers who fatally shot a 45-year-old man during a suicide attempt Wednesday inside an Ellicott City home. The police also released further details about the incident.

Officials said Police Officer First Class Daniel Young, 33, and Police Officer Lara Bradshaw, 25, shot and wounded Darren Friedman after the officers responded to the 7600 block of Coachlight Lane about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When Young and Bradshaw arrived at the home, they spoke with a family member and entered the residence, police said. As the officers entered a bedroom, officials said they found Friedman covered in blood with several self-inflicted lacerations.

As they tried to help Friedman, he confronted them with a knife and both officers fired their weapons, officials said. Friedman was later pronounced dead at a Baltimore hospital.

Officials said Young is a six-year veteran of the department and Bradshaw began working last year. Both officers are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, police said.

According to officials, Friedman’s family members told police he had previously attempted suicide. Police said they had no prior contacts with him before Wednesday.
