Man admits to four bank robberies, Montgomery police say

A Hyattsville man who was arrested in connection with a bank robbery on Monday has admitted to three additional robberies, Montgomery County police said.

Jose Mercedes has now been charged with robbing all four banks.

Police said they caught Mercedes, 45, hiding in a shed in a Kensington back yard on Monday shortly after a robbery at the M&T Bank on the 10400 block of Montgomery Avenue. They said in a press release that Mercedes had passed a note to the teller demanding money and implying that he had a weapon. He left the bank with a bag of cash, which was found near the shed, police said.

According to police, Mercedes confessed to the robbery on Monday, as well as robberies of two other M&T Banks, one in Potomac and one in Bethesda, in December 2013. He also admitted to robbing a Wells Fargo bank in Potomac in March 2014, police said.
