Man dies after Silver Spring stabbing; suspect will now be charged with murder

The victim of a stabbing in Silver Spring died of his injuries on Monday, and Montgomery County police are now charging the man accused of assaulting him with first-degree murder.

Tomas Herrera Batres, 49, was found suffering from stab wounds last week in an apartment on the 8200 block of Piney Branch Road, where he lived. A witness saw a man running from the apartment building and followed him in a car. The witness led police officers to Ulises A. Blanco-Melgar, according to a police press release.

Blanco-Melgar, a 31-year-old Hyattsville resident, was charged initially with attempted first degree murder and assault. After Batres died, police obtained a warrant to charge Blanco-Melgar with homicide.

He has been in jail since the June 19 stabbing, police said.
